Our Story

Tramway Community Church began in 1949 with a small group of families gathering in Rev. Ernest K. Bates’ home in southeast Albuquerque. What started as a simple gathering for fellowship, worship, and the Word of God grew into Highland Assembly of God in 1951.

For more than seven decades, God has faithfully led our church through seasons of growth, change, and expansion. In 1993, the congregation purchased property at Tramway and Tramway Ridge, and in 1995, we became Tramway Community Church. After meeting at El Dorado High School for several years, construction began on our current campus in 1997. As our church and ministries continued to grow, additional expansion followed in 2007–2008.

Today, we are a Spirit-filled, Assemblies of God-affiliated church committed to following Jesus, building community, and reaching the next generation.

In 2025, Pastor Nelson Vargas was welcomed as our Lead Pastor. Along with his wife, Diane, and their son, Noah, Pastor Nelson brings nearly 20 years of ministry experience and a passion for reaching people and investing in the next generation.

Today, we honor the faithfulness of those who came before us while looking forward with faith and excitement to all God has in store.
